Lt. Gov. Patrick and Speaker Burrows Demonstrate Bold Commitment to Veterans Suffering from PTSD and TBI
AUSTIN, Texas, April 2, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Veterans Exploring Treatment Solutions (VETS) today applauded the joint announcement from Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Dustin Burrows that Texas will move forward with its own ibogaine research program, committing to fully fund the $100 million effort in partnership with the state's leading medical research institutions.
"This is a defining moment for veterans suffering from PTSD and traumatic brain injury," said Marcus Capone, Co-Founder of VETS. "Lt. Gov. Patrick and Speaker Burrows heard veteran voices — they saw the evidence — and they are following through. Texas is showing the rest of the country what it looks like to put veterans first. We are incredibly grateful for their leadership and their resolve."
"Without the VETS organization and the personal stories of so many veterans, the Texas Ibogaine Initiative would never have gotten off the ground," said Cody Harris, Texas State Representative and sponsor of SB2308. "I am honored to stand shoulder to shoulder with Marcus, Amber, and the entire VETS team in celebrating this massive milestone as Texas moves forward in bringing Ibogaine to a final FDA approved treatment for the millions who need it."
VETS has long championed ibogaine as a promising treatment for the invisible wounds that have claimed far too many veteran lives. The organization has supported veterans in accessing ibogaine treatment, funded research, and advocated at the state and federal level for expanded access and clinical study.
"The courage it takes to commit $100 million in state funding to a treatment that has given so many of our veterans their lives back is extraordinary," said Amber Capone, Co-Founder and CEO of VETS. "For years, we have made it possible for veterans to travel to Mexico because they had no other option. Texas is changing that. Lt. Gov. Patrick and Speaker Burrows are not just passing bills — they are saving lives."
Texas' commitment builds on the foundation of Senate Bill 2308, signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott, which established a statewide consortium to conduct ibogaine clinical trials and pursue FDA approval. With UTHealth Houston and UT Medical Branch at Galveston selected to lead the research effort with support from the Charmaine and Gordon McGill Center for Psychedelic Research and Therapy at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin, Texas is positioned to generate the rigorous clinical data needed to bring this treatment to veterans nationwide.
VETS urges other states and federal lawmakers to follow Texas' lead in prioritizing research into ibogaine and other novel therapeutics for veterans.
